727,416 business energy meters are still not smart
Large suppliers were running 727,416 non-smart business gas and electricity meters in Q2 2026, about 35% of the 2,076,372 they operate
The figures
- 727,416 non-smart business meters in Q2 2026, down 12.9% from 835,054 a year earlier.
- 1,278,904 smart meters running in smart mode, or advanced meters, and 70,052 smart meters working in traditional mode, sending no readings.
- In Q3 2012, the first quarter in the series, there were 2,324,686 non-smart business meters.
Without a smart or advanced meter, a business is billed on estimated or manual readings and cannot easily see when it uses most. A smart meter that has fallen back to traditional mode is no better. Suppliers and brokers can arrange a smart meter, and accurate half-hourly or daily data makes quotes more accurate too.
